Help for the Aging Stomach!!! Get off the antacid merry-go-round!!!

Eat Ease

Do you have frequent heartburn, indigestion, bloating and gas problems? According to Jonathan Wright, MD, an antacid may be just the opposite of what you need! Your indigestion could be caused by your stomach secreting too little hydrochloride acid (HCl) or digestive enzymes such as pepsin. As we get older, our organs don't work as well. We can't run as fast, our hearing and vision is usually less acute, and our skin is less elastic. We recognize this truth for many of our organs, but several of us forget about our stomachs. Why should our stomachs be any different? Why should stomachs become more active with age, rather than less? Our stomachs, in fact, become less active and less able to produce all the needed digestive agents as we age. Two of our most important stomach functionaries are hydrochloride acid and the protein-digesting enzyme, pepsin. Scientific literature indicates that levels of these important agents may drop off dramatically with increasing years.

  • Participates in the release of cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone from the intestinal mucosa which stimulates the gall bladder to release bile.
  • Acts as a barrier to ingested bacteria, thus helping to improve immune function.
