Bye-Lori
500,000-850,000 new cases of peptic ulcers are diagnosed each year. Approximately
80% of these ulcers are associated with infection by a particularly unpleasant
bacterium, Helicobacter pylori. A recent study found that only 27% of respondents
were aware that H. pylori may cause ulcers; by contrast, 60% thought that stress
was the leading cause, and 17% thought that eating spicy foods caused ulcers.
Researchers believe that H. pylori is responsible for the majority of peptic
ulcers, and many other gastric disorders.
H. pylori infection is common in the United States: About 20 percent of people under 40 years old and half of those over 60 years have it. Most infected people, however, do not develop ulcers. Why H. pylori does not cause ulcers in every infected person is not known. Most likely, infection depends on characteristics of the infected person, the type of H. pylori, and other factors yet to be discovered.

An Age-Old Remedy Rediscovered
An effective alternative that is both inexpensive and safe to use in cases of H. pylori infection is mastic. There is a rich medical tradition supporting the use of mastic to alleviate stomach discomfort. Until recently, however, the mechanism by which mastic improved gastrointestinal health was not clear. In the early 1980s, researchers in the Middle East (including Iraq) presented evidence that mastic was far superior to placebo in healing duodenal ulcers (70% versus 22%). Further experiments demonstrated that mastic acted by killing H. pylori.
Mastic also eases other gastrointestinal complaints, such as dyspepsia (chronic indigestion) and gastritis, soothing a range of symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, gas, and bloating by killing other insidious gastrointestinal bacteria. Recently, scientific interest in mastic was reawakened, and it is now the subject of much research focusing on gastrointestinal health and peptic ulcers.
Bye-Lori is a dietary supplement containing mastic gum, a natural resin of the Pistacia lentiscus tree, cultivated in the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Used as a medical antiseptic and food antioxidant, today it is used as a chewing gum base and flavoring additive in a wide range of traditional foods and drinks.
Mastic may be able to help maintain and even restore proper stomach digestive function because of its effect on the structure of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium implicated in gastrointestinal dysfunctions.
Hyperforin, from St. John's wort, is widely used as an anti-depressant, but has been shown to be effective in killing some forms of bacteria. Cinnamon and Thyme, not only inhibit the growth of H.pylori, but they are also good for killing certain fungi.
